University of North Alabama public relations major Molly Kiel, of Huntsville, Ala., was presented the Michael K. Simmons Memorial Scholarship at the June 20 meeting of the North Alabama Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama in Huntsville. The award, based on grade point average, extracurricular activities, a faculty recommendation and an essay, is $2,000 toward the recipient's tuition and fees for the upcoming academic semester. The scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are NAPRCA members and attend a north Alabama college or university majoring in public relations or public relations-related fields of study. Molly serves as secretary of UNA's student public relations organization, UNA PRide, is a dean's list scholar, and has served on the University Programming Council, UNA Presidential Mentors Academy, Freshman Forum, Residence Hall Council, and as a UNA ambassador to the Florence Chamber of Commerce. She also serves as academic chair of her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, and has volunteered for the Florence Animal Shelter and Keestone Assisted Living in Florence. Since 2017, Molly has operated her own business, Molly B. Flowers, LLC, in Huntsville. The North Alabama chapter of PRCA established the Michael K. Simmons Memorial Scholarship Program in 1994, with the purpose of encouraging students to explore the public relations profession and to introduce them to PRCA and the important role a professional organization can play in the early stages of their career. Funds for the scholarship are raised from individual member donations, professional development events and workshops. The Public Relations Council of Alabama seeks to promote the development of public relations practitioners through continuing education and increased awareness about the profession. ###
